Where I'm coming from

Anyone who dares to watch the wonderment that is the SEC knows they need a dog in the fight, no matter who your team may be. This happens to be my current SEC patron saint.

Behold Darren McFadden. Amazing freshman season in which he nearly led the conference in rushing despite Houston Nutt strangely not playing him for most of the first third of the season. Shattered the school freshman rushing records with over 1100 yards and a per carry average of over six. Preseason first team All-SEC, ridiculous expectations, etc etc. And then last week he got into a tussle outside of a club in Little Rock and dislocated his damn toe. Its more than likely, Mr. McFadden will not be partaking in the merriment of the season opener against USC. The same USC that put a 70-17 whooping on my Hogs, including TD passes from third string QBs last year in LA. This is bad news. I wasn't expecting an upset win by the Hogs as it was, but this puts a damper on it even more. Even with speed of sound backup RB Felix Jones ready to roll.

The plus side is that this is the SEC. Therefore, McFadden's injury in such a quasi-Fulmer Cup display of bizzaro-world intrigue will no doubt lead to a more successful season. Some of Coach Nutt's best teams have had their stars busted for DUIs, possession of drugs, and the like. This can only mean Darren's late night interludes in Little Rock will soon equal success on the playing field. As long as he is back for Vandy.

Seriously, how did we lose to Vandy last year?

Pardon the Inturruption. I'm a USC guy headed to the Arkansas game next month. My first game in SEC country and I'm excited.

So what are the must see sites/watering holes/restaurants I should check out while in Fayetteville?

PS: Good job on your spontaneous formation of SECJorts

Please do give yourself a nice little tour of the campus, it's quite lovely. As is NW Arkansas as a whole. Plenty of great bars along Dickson Street, which is the main drag in Fayetteville. I've not been to Fayetteville in quite some time for more than a quick visit (I moved away from Arkansas before my senior year of high school so I never lived the dream of matriculating on that campus). I think you'll find our fans to be a friendly and very dedicated bunch. I'll try to get some names of places from the guys on the HawgSports.com board and get back to you. Enjoy your trip, but I hope you don't ENJOY your trip.

And don't forget that Arkansas fans yell "SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOIE" the entire freakin' game. It gets rather annoying. So be ready for that.

Awesome! Thanks for the tips all.

I've received a vote to go to Penguin Ed's BBQ. Any thoughts on this place? Good? Bad? Better suggestions?

Well its not quite "SOOOOOIE" all game, but we do rock out the "Woo Pig Sooie" whenever the moment seems right.

For my money, the best atmosphere for a Razorback game is in Little Rock and not Fayetteville. That place shakes when the cheer is going around.

I'll put up a post looking for a good bbq joint in town, its my understanding that Fayetteville is sorta lacking in that department these days.

Big T,

I doubt you'll have the time or opportunity, but if you get the chance, my limited experiences in the state of Arkansas say that Hot Springs isn't too bad of a place to hang out in for an evening.

You're with me, run on sentence.

bigtdog, I have some answers for you:
Stuff to do in the Fayetteville area

Best Food: Mary Maestri's, Catfish Hole, AQ Chicken, Doe's
Best Party Scene: George's Majestic-especially if there is a cover band playing
Best Diversions: A drive through the Boston Mountains, War Eagle Mill....

HawgsRUs

-------------

AQ's Chicken over the Coals is OK though not as good as it used to be. The PickleO's can be good depending on the batch and how recently they changed the fryer oil. Mostly, AQ is a lot greasier food than in the past.

Other suggestions:

Mexican: La Hacienda, Mexico Viejo, or Acambaro. Cecelia's and Elenita's are OK too. La Hacienda has the best quality ingredients (great Asada steak), Mexico Viejo is the friendliest.

Chinese: East Buffet - Mongolian grill and sushi along with a full buffet and the best steamed rice in NW Arkansas.

BBQ: Everyone knows about Hermans but Sonny's in Springdale is pretty good too.

Chicken and Italian: Best Chicken in the area for my money is at Mama Z's in Tontitown. With the Tontitown spaghetti (best in the world) it's as good as Mary Maestri's for about 20% less.

Chain places: Logan's pork chops and ribs are awfully good for a national chain. I've never had a bad pork chop there.

Tim's Pizza is solid, but go to the one on the square or at Crossover. If you want really classy and tasty pizza though, try Picasso's on Wedington, west of the bypass.

---------------

Dickson Street, Dickson Street, Dickson Street - It's been under-emphasized because everyone from Arkansas knows about it, but everything starts here. If visiting for UofA football, this street has it all and is a must. Good food, bars, and minor shopping in a safe enviroment (other than Rogers Pool Hall after midnight).

There is more of the thread I can send to you via e-mail if you'd like
